Patriots sign TE Brian Jones; Release TE Matt Kranchick

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed veteran free agent tight end Brian Jones today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Additionally, the Patriots released tight end Matt Kranchick.
Jones, 25, is a veteran of two NFL seasons and has played in 29 games with one start for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2004-06). The 6-foot-3-inch, 258-pound tight end has recorded nine career receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. The Arkansas-Pine Bluff product was signed by the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2004 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games as a rookie in 2004, recording six receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. In 2005, Jones played in 13 games with one start and totaled three receptions for 49 yards. Last season, Jones was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 29, 2006, and missed the entire season.
Kranchick, 27, was signed to the Patriots practice squad on Dec. 13, 2006 and was signed to the active roster on Jan. 23, 2007. The 6-foot-7-inch, 260-pound tight end has played in eight career NFL games with one start for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2004-05) and New York Giants (2005). He has recorded one career reception for six yards, coming in a 2005 game while playing for the Steelers. Kranchick was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the sixth round (194th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft.
